Morocco has more regions than most travelers can fit into a single trip, so this itinerary focuses on the three most requested by first-time visitors: the Sahara Desert, an imperial city, and a well-known natural landmark within reach of Marrakech. Rather than trying to cover everything, it gives each of those a real half-day or more, instead of stretching thin across a longer list of stops.
A loop, not an out-and-back
The outbound route to the desert and Fes runs via Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, while the return leg comes back through Meknes, Volubilis and the Ouzoud Waterfalls — a different path in each direction rather than retracing the same roads twice. It’s also a genuinely more direct way to get from Fes back to Marrakech than looping south through the Dades Valley a second time.

Most days on this route combine several hours of driving with a specific stop — a kasbah, a gorge, a medina, or a waterfall — rather than constant movement without a destination in mind. The two full-day stops, Fes and the desert camp, break up what would otherwise be a trip made up entirely of driving days.
Handling the length of the trip
Eight days of near-daily travel adds up, even with a private driver managing the logistics. The overnight in Beni Mellal on day 6 exists specifically to avoid combining the long Fes-to-Marrakech distance into a single exhausting day, giving the final stretch to Ouzoud and Marrakech a more comfortable pace instead.

Full Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Marrakech
Your driver meets you on arrival, and this first day stays light: a half-day looking around Marrakech's Medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa rather than heading straight out on the road. Overnight in a Marrakech hotel or riad.
Day 2
Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Ben Haddou
Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops at viewpoints along the way. Visit the Ait Ben Haddou ksar before continuing through Ouarzazate toward the Dades Valley, where you overnight in a guesthouse or kasbah.
Day 3
Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge
Travel east through the Dades Valley's rock formations and continue to the Todra Gorge for a short walk beneath its towering limestone walls. In the late afternoon, arrive in Merzouga and set off by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, reaching the desert camp in time for sunset, dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.
Day 4
Sunrise in the dunes and on to Fes
Wake early for sunrise over the dunes before riding back to Merzouga by camel. After breakfast, drive north through the Ziz Valley's palm groves and the Middle Atlas to Fes, arriving in the evening.
Day 5
Fes Medina
A full day guided through Fes el-Bali, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Expect the Royal Palace gate, the historic Mellah quarter, the Chouara tanneries, and the Al Quaraouiyine mosque and university district, founded in 859 and recognized as the world's oldest continuously operating university.
Day 6
Fes to Beni Mellal via Meknes and Volubilis
Head south to Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the vast royal stables built under Sultan Moulay Ismail, then to Volubilis, where mosaic floors and standing columns mark a former Roman provincial capital. Continue toward Beni Mellal for an overnight, breaking up what would otherwise be a very long drive back to Marrakech.
Day 7
Beni Mellal to Marrakech via Ouzoud Waterfalls
Stop at the Ouzoud Waterfalls, among the tallest in North Africa, where a trail leads down through olive groves to the base of the falls and the pools where wild Barbary macaques are often seen. Continue the final stretch to Marrakech, arriving in the afternoon or evening.
Day 8
Departure from Marrakech
The tour ends after breakfast, with free time before your onward flight or transfer, depending on your departure time.
