How long is the 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour?

This private tour runs 5 days and 4 nights, starting and ending in Marrakech, and follows the same route as our 3- and 4-day tours but spreads it out enough to give Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley real time rather than treating them as stops along the way.

Why choose 5 days instead of 3 or 4

Our shorter Merzouga round trips are built for travelers who want the desert camp experience without spending too many days getting there. This version is for the opposite priority: travelers who’d like to actually see Ouarzazate’s film studios and kasbah, and spend an evening in the Dades Valley rather than passing through, without giving up the round-trip structure that ends back in Marrakech.

Route and stops

The route covers the same ground as our shorter tours — the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge, and the Erg Chebbi dune camp at Merzouga — but adds a dedicated overnight in Ouarzazate on day 1 and keeps the Dades Valley stop on both the outbound and return legs, rather than pushing straight through in either direction.

What the pace feels like

With five days covering roughly the same distance as our 3-day tour, no single day involves as much continuous driving. It’s a comfortable pace for travelers who find long back-to-back driving days tiring, or who simply want more flexibility to stop, take photos, and explore each place without watching the clock.

Who this itinerary suits

This is the round-trip version we suggest for travelers with five days to spare who want to properly see the towns and valleys along the route, not just the desert camp at the end of it. If your itinerary continues north afterward instead of returning to Marrakech, our 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour covers similar ground at a similar pace but ends in Fes.

Tour Highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • Visit the Ait Ben Haddou ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • A fuller day around Ouarzazate and the Rose Valley on the way out, rather than a quick pass-through
  • Drive the Dades Valley and the narrow Todra Gorge without rushing
  • Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
  • Overnight in a desert camp under the stars near Merzouga
  • An optional sunrise walk in the dunes before the return journey
  • A second, more relaxed overnight in the Dades Valley on the way back instead of driving straight through

Full Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Ait Ben Haddou

Depart Marrakech and cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Visit the Ait Ben Haddou ksar, then continue to Ouarzazate for an overnight, with time to see its film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah before dinner rather than driving straight through.

  2. Day 2

Ouarzazate to Dades Valley via the Rose Valley

Head east through the Rose Valley around Kelaat M'Gouna, known for its rose harvest and cooperatives producing rosewater and cosmetics, before continuing to the Dades Valley for an overnight, with time to see the valley's rock formations and scattered kasbahs in the late afternoon light.

  3. Day 3

Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge

Continue east through the Todra Gorge for a walk beneath its towering limestone walls before crossing the plains toward Merzouga. In the late afternoon, set off by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, reaching the desert camp in time for sunset, dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.

  4. Day 4

Sunrise in the dunes and return toward the Dades Valley

Watch the sunrise over the dunes before riding back to Merzouga by camel. After breakfast, begin the return journey, stopping again in the Dades Valley area for a second, more relaxed overnight rather than driving straight through to Marrakech.

  5. Day 5

    Return to Marrakech

Complete the drive back to Marrakech over the High Atlas, with a rest stop along the way, arriving in the afternoon or early evening.

Important Information

  • This is the most relaxed of our Marrakech-Merzouga round trips, adding genuine time in Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley rather than just extra buffer for driving.
  • The camel trek to the desert camp can be substituted with a 4x4 transfer on request.
  • Bring a warm layer for desert nights, even outside of winter, as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
  • If you'd rather cover this route faster, our 3- and 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tours follow the same stops at a quicker pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this differ from your 3- and 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tours?

All three follow the same core route, but this 5-day version adds genuine sightseeing time in Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley on the way out, rather than just passing through. It suits travelers who'd rather explore those stops properly than reach Merzouga as quickly as possible.

Is 5 days too long for this route?

Not if you'd like a slower pace — each day involves less driving than the 3- or 4-day versions, since the same distance is spread over an extra day. If time is more limited, our 3-day tour covers the same desert camp experience faster.

Can this tour continue to Fes instead of returning to Marrakech?

Yes — our 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour follows a similar pace but ends in Fes instead of looping back, which suits travelers continuing north afterward.

What's included in the Ouarzazate stop?

The overnight gives time to see the Taourirt Kasbah and, if you're interested, one of the film studios that have used the surrounding desert as a backdrop for decades. It's a relaxed evening stop rather than a full guided day.
