How long is the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour?

This private tour runs 4 days and 3 nights, starting and ending in Marrakech, and follows the same route as our 3-day version but spreads the driving over an extra day.

Why choose 4 days instead of 3

The 3-day version covers the same distance but requires two longer driving days — one out, one back. The 4-day version adds a second overnight stop on the return leg, usually back in the Dades Valley or Todra Gorge area, so no single day of driving is longer than necessary and there’s more time to actually stop and look around rather than just pass through.

Route and stops

The route is identical to the 3-day tour: Marrakech, the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge, and Merzouga for the desert camp, before returning the same way. The difference is entirely in pacing, not destinations.

Tour Highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • Visit the Ait Ben Haddou ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • An extra day to explore the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge without rushing
  • Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
  • Overnight in a desert camp under the stars
  • A more relaxed return journey to Marrakech, split over two days

Full Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Ben Haddou

Depart Marrakech and cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Visit Ait Ben Haddou before continuing through Ouarzazate to the Dades Valley for the first overnight.

  2. Day 2

Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge

Spend the morning in the Dades Valley before continuing to the Todra Gorge for a walk beneath its cliffs. Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon and ride by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset arrival at the desert camp.

  3. Day 3

Sunrise in the dunes and return toward the Dades Valley

Watch the sunrise over the dunes before riding back to Merzouga by camel. After breakfast, begin the return journey, stopping again in the Todra Gorge or Dades Valley area for a second, more relaxed overnight rather than driving straight through.

  4. Day 4

    Return to Marrakech

Complete the drive back to Marrakech over the High Atlas, arriving in the afternoon or early evening.

Important Information

  • The extra day compared to the 3-day version is used to slow down the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge sections rather than to add new destinations.
  • The camel trek to the desert camp can be substituted with a 4x4 transfer on request.
  • Bring a warm layer for desert nights, even outside of winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the 3-day and 4-day Merzouga tours?

Both follow the same route and stops. The 4-day version simply spreads the driving over an extra day, allowing more time in the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge rather than covering the same ground faster.

Is the extra day worth it?

If you'd rather not spend two long driving days in a row, the 4-day version is more comfortable, with a second overnight stop on the way back instead of returning to Marrakech in one push.
