Ouarzazate’s position south of the High Atlas, on the direct road toward the Dades Valley and Merzouga, makes it the shortest standard route to the Sahara Desert of any major Moroccan town — a 2-day, 1-night trip compared to the 3 to 4 days typically needed from Marrakech.
The route follows the same scenic stretch used by longer Marrakech-based tours: the Dades Valley’s rock formations and the narrow Todra Gorge, before reaching Merzouga for a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and an overnight desert camp.
Ouarzazate is also the closest base for visiting Ait Ben Haddou, about 30 minutes away, which can be combined with the desert route or booked as its own short excursion.
