How long is the 6-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

This private tour runs 6 days and 5 nights, starting in Marrakech and ending in Fes. It builds on our 5-day version by adding a full day exploring the Merzouga region beyond the dune camp, plus a guided day in the Fes medina before the tour ends.

More than a drive-through at both ends

Our shorter Marrakech-to-Fes tours treat Merzouga as an overnight stop and Fes as a drop-off point. This version gives both places genuine attention instead: a full day around Merzouga visiting nomad families and the Gnaoua village of Khamlia, and a full guided day through the Fes medina rather than arriving and being left to find your own way.

Route and stops

The route follows the same core stops as our shorter versions — the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge, and the Middle Atlas — with two additions: a dedicated Merzouga exploration day, and a guided medina walk in Fes on the final afternoon instead of a simple drop-off.

Handling six days on the road

Six days of near-daily travel is more tiring than it looks on paper, even with a private driver handling the logistics. The Merzouga exploration day is placed deliberately in the middle of the route, giving the trip a slower, more local-feeling stretch before the final push north through the Middle Atlas to Fes.

Who this itinerary suits

This is the version we suggest for travelers who want the full experience at both ends of the trip — real time in the Merzouga desert region, not just a dune camp overnight, and a proper first look at Fes rather than being dropped off to explore alone. If you’d rather keep the trip shorter and skip either addition, our 3-, 4- and 5-day Marrakech-to-Fes tours cover the same core route.

Full Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Ait Ben Haddou

Depart Marrakech and cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Visit the Ait Ben Haddou ksar, then continue to Ouarzazate for an overnight, with time to see its film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah before dinner.

  2. Day 2

Ouarzazate to Dades Valley via the Rose Valley

Head east through the Rose Valley around Kelaat M'Gouna before continuing to the Dades Valley for an overnight, with time to see the valley's rock formations and scattered kasbahs before dinner.

  3. Day 3

Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge

Continue east through the Todra Gorge for a walk beneath its towering limestone walls before crossing the plains toward Merzouga. In the late afternoon, set off by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, reaching the desert camp in time for sunset, dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.

  4. Day 4

    Merzouga Exploration

Rather than leaving the desert the next morning, this day stays around Merzouga to see parts of the region a one-night stop skips entirely. An early start can catch the sunrise from a dune crest before breakfast, followed by a 4x4 excursion to visit a Berber nomad family living at the desert's edge, and on to Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnaoua musicians descended from sub-Saharan trade caravans. Overnight in a hotel near Merzouga.

  5. Day 5

    Merzouga to the Middle Atlas

Drive north through the Ziz Valley's palm groves and Midelt, continuing into the Middle Atlas for an overnight in the Ifrane or Midelt area, arriving with time to settle in before dinner.

  6. Day 6

    Middle Atlas to Fes

A shorter final morning through the cedar forests around Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques regularly appear along the roadside, before descending from Ifrane into Fes. The afternoon is spent on a guided walk through the Fes medina, including the Chouara tanneries and the Al Quaraouiyine mosque and university district, before the tour ends with drop-off at your riad.

Important Information

  • The extra day around Merzouga compared to our 5-day version is spent on a 4x4 excursion to Khamlia and nearby nomad families, not repeating the dune camp experience.
  • This is the only one of our Marrakech-to-Fes desert tours that includes a full guided day in the Fes medina before the tour ends.
  • The camel trek to the desert camp can be substituted with a 4x4 transfer on request.
  • Bring a warm layer for desert nights and for the Middle Atlas overnight, which sits at a noticeably cooler elevation than Merzouga.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the extra day around Merzouga actually add?

It's a 4x4 day trip around the Merzouga area itself — nomad families and the Khamlia music village — rather than just the dune camp and a drive-through, which is what our shorter Marrakech-to-Fes tours cover.

Is this the only Marrakech-to-Fes tour with a guided Fes day included?

Yes — our 3-, 4- and 5-day versions of this route all end with drop-off in Fes, but this 6-day version is the one that includes a full guided medina walk before the tour officially ends.

Is 6 days too long for this route?

It's a genuine step up in scope, not just pacing — the extra time goes toward new ground around Merzouga and a proper introduction to Fes, rather than padding. If you'd rather keep things shorter, our 3-, 4- or 5-day versions cover the core desert crossing without those additions.

Can the Merzouga exploration day be swapped for something else?

Yes — some travelers prefer an extra night in the Dades Valley instead. Let us know your priorities when booking and we can adjust the itinerary.
