A handful of nomadic and semi-nomadic families still live in tents around the edges of the Erg Chebbi dunes, herding goats and camels much as their families have for generations, even as most of the wider community has settled into permanent housing in Merzouga and surrounding villages.
A visit typically involves a short, guided introduction to the family, a look at how a nomad household is set up, and traditional mint tea, prepared and served in the customary way. The emphasis is on a brief, respectful exchange rather than an extended tour, out of consideration for the family’s day-to-day life.
This activity is often combined with a 4x4 excursion, since reaching some of the more remote family camps requires a vehicle rather than a camel or on-foot approach.
