Our 2-day Fes to Merzouga tour is built for travelers who want the shortest possible round trip with a genuine night in the dunes. This version is for the opposite priority: travelers who’d rather see the Dades Gorges and the Todra Gorge properly on the way down, and spend a full day around Merzouga itself — visiting a nomad family and the Gnaoua village of Khamlia — rather than turning around the morning after the desert camp.
Route and stops
The route south from Fes is identical for the first stretch — Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forests, Midelt and the Ziz Valley — but instead of driving straight through to Merzouga in a single day, this version turns off toward the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge first, adding two genuine sightseeing stops that the 2-day version skips entirely.
More than an overnight in the dunes
Most short desert tours treat Merzouga as a single overnight stop. This one gives the region a full day of its own: a 4x4 excursion to a Berber nomad family living at the desert’s edge, and on to Khamlia, where Gnaoua musicians descended from sub-Saharan trade caravans still perform. The return leg also stops at Rissani’s traditional souk and the fossil workshops of Erfoud, both directly on the road back north.
