Ifrane and Azrou sit in the Middle Atlas about an hour to ninety minutes from Fes, and together they make one of the easiest and most accessible day trips from the city. Ifrane’s stone chalets and steep tiled roofs give it a distinctly alpine feel that stands out from most Moroccan towns, a legacy of its origins as a hill station.
Beyond Ifrane, the road continues through cedar forest near Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques are a common sight moving through the trees near the roadside. This private day trip also stops at Dayet Aoua, a seasonal lake set among the hills above Immouzer du Kandar, before continuing into the forest. It’s a shorter, more relaxed outing than the day trips to Chefchaouen or Meknes and Volubilis, and a good option for travelers who want a taste of the Middle Atlas without committing to a longer desert route.
