The trip from Marrakech to Merzouga is Morocco’s most-booked multi-day route, and for good reason: it connects the country’s most visited city to its most accessible stretch of Sahara Desert, by way of some of its most striking mountain and pre-desert scenery.
The route at a glance
The standard route runs: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka pass (High Atlas) → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi), then back the same way, or on to Fes for travelers doing a one-way trip. The full one-way distance is roughly 560 km (350 miles).
How many days should you plan?
Most travelers choose between a 3-day and a 4-day round trip. The 3-day version covers the route with two full driving days — one out, one back — while the 4-day version spreads the return leg over two lighter days with a second overnight stop, rather than driving straight back to Marrakech. Neither adds new destinations; the difference is entirely pacing.
What the journey actually involves
Day one typically covers the mountain crossing and Ait Ben Haddou, ending with an overnight in the Dades Valley area. Day two continues through the Todra Gorge before reaching Merzouga in the afternoon for the camel trek into the dunes and an overnight desert camp — usually the highlight of the trip. The return (or continuation to Fes) retraces or extends from there.
What the desert camp is like
Camps sit within the Erg Chebbi dunes and are reached by camel, typically timed for a sunset arrival. Expect a private tent, a shared dinner, often music around a fire, and a very dark, clear night sky given the low light pollution. Mornings usually include a short walk or climb to watch the sunrise before riding back to Merzouga.
Deciding between 3 and 4 days
Choose 3 days if you’d rather cover the trip more quickly and don’t mind two longer driving days. Choose 4 days if you prefer a second, lighter overnight stop on the way back rather than one long return drive — the stops and scenery are otherwise the same.
Booking considerations
Because these tours run privately, departure dates are flexible, and the itinerary can be adjusted for specific interests (extra time at Ait Ben Haddou, a different overnight location, and so on) before you travel.
