How long is the northern Morocco tour from Tangier?

This private tour runs 5 days and 4 nights, starting and ending in Tangier. It’s built for travelers who want to see the north of Morocco properly — Chefchaouen, Tetouan and the coast — without continuing south into the desert or as far as Marrakech.

Why stay in the north

Most Tangier departures are built as one-way routes toward Fes and Marrakech, which makes sense for travelers continuing their trip south. This itinerary is for the opposite case: travelers whose flight or ferry departs from Tangier, or who simply don’t have the time — or interest — for the longer south-bound routes, and would rather spend their days in the Rif Mountains and along the northern coast instead.

Route and stops

The loop covers four distinct stops without retracing much ground: Tetouan’s Andalusian-influenced medina on the way in, two nights in Chefchaouen for a properly relaxed visit rather than a rushed one, a night in the coastal town of Asilah, and a final stop at Cape Spartel and the Hercules Caves just outside Tangier on the way back.

A gentler pace than the desert routes

Because the north is a compact region, none of the driving days on this route come close to the long stretches required to cross the High Atlas or reach the Sahara. It’s a comfortable itinerary for travelers who’d rather explore a smaller area properly than spend long days in the vehicle.

Who this itinerary suits

This is the tour we suggest for travelers arriving in Tangier by ferry from Spain, or flying in and out of Tangier, who want a genuine look at northern Morocco without committing to the week or more a full south-bound route requires. If your plans do call for reaching Fes, the Sahara or Marrakech, our Tangier to Marrakech tours cover that ground instead.

Tour Highlights

  • Tetouan's UNESCO-listed Andalusian-style medina on the way in
  • Two nights in Chefchaouen's blue-painted old town, tucked into the Rif Mountains
  • An optional hike to the old Spanish mosque above Chefchaouen
  • A night in the coastal art town of Asilah, known for its murals
  • Cape Spartel and the Hercules Caves on the way back into Tangier
  • A round trip that returns to Tangier — no need for a separate transfer back for a ferry or flight

Full Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Tangier to Chefchaouen via Tetouan

Leave Tangier and head south through the Rif foothills to Tetouan, whose Andalusian-style medina, shaped by refugees from Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Continue into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, arriving with time to see the blue-washed streets in the evening light.

  2. Day 2

    Chefchaouen

A full day to explore Chefchaouen at an easy pace: the main square, the old Kasbah, and the steep lanes where nearly every wall is painted some shade of blue. Most travelers spend part of the day on the roughly 45-minute hike up to the old Spanish mosque for a wide view back over the town.

  3. Day 3

    Chefchaouen to Asilah

Head west out of the Rif Mountains toward the Atlantic coast, arriving in Asilah in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day walking the ramparts overlooking the ocean and exploring the whitewashed medina, known for the murals painted across its walls each year during an international arts festival.

  4. Day 4

Asilah to Tangier via Cape Spartel

A relaxed morning in Asilah before heading back north to Tangier, with a stop at Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean is traditionally said to meet the Mediterranean Sea, and the nearby Hercules Caves, known for an opening onto the water shaped like a map of Africa. Arrive back in Tangier in the late afternoon, with the evening free to explore the Kasbah and old Medina.

  5. Day 5

    Departure from Tangier

The tour ends after breakfast, with free time before your onward ferry or flight.

Important Information

  • This tour stays entirely in the north and returns to Tangier — it doesn't reach Fes, the desert or Marrakech. If you'd rather continue south, our Tangier to Marrakech tours cover that route instead.
  • The order of stops can be adjusted, and a short visit to Tetouan's medina can be added on either the outbound or return leg.
  • This is a comfortable itinerary with relatively short driving days, since the north is a compact region compared to routes that cross the Atlas mountains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tour go all the way to Fes or Marrakech?

No — this itinerary stays in the north and returns to Tangier. If you'd like to continue to Fes and Marrakech, or add the Sahara Desert, our Tangier to Marrakech tours cover those routes as one-way itineraries instead.

Why choose a round trip to Tangier instead of a one-way route south?

This suits travelers whose flight or ferry departs from Tangier rather than Marrakech or Casablanca, or who simply want to see the north properly — Chefchaouen, Tetouan and the coast — without the time commitment of crossing the Atlas mountains and back.

How does this compare to a Tangier to Chefchaouen day trip?

A day trip covers Chefchaouen alone and returns the same day. This 5-day tour adds a second night in Chefchaouen for a more relaxed pace, plus Tetouan and a night in Asilah on the coast — genuinely different stops, not just more time in the same place.

Can this tour be shortened or extended?

Yes — a shorter 3-day version focused on just Chefchaouen and Tetouan is possible, and travelers with more time sometimes extend this itinerary with a few days on the coast further south. Let us know your priorities when booking.
