Imlil is a small village in the High Atlas Mountains, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Marrakech, and it serves as the main starting point for hikes into the surrounding valley — from short walks between Berber villages to the two-day ascent of Mount Toubkal, at 4,167 meters the highest peak in North Africa.
The village itself sits at around 1,800 meters, noticeably cooler than Marrakech, surrounded by walnut groves and terraced fields irrigated by mountain streams. Even without attempting Toubkal, the valley offers well-marked paths to nearby villages, giving visitors a straightforward introduction to Berber mountain life and architecture without technical difficulty.
Because of its proximity to Marrakech, Imlil is one of the most accessible mountain day trips from the city, and also functions as an overnight base for travelers preparing for the Toubkal ascent, which is normally done with a licensed mountain guide.
