Imlil sits in the High Atlas Mountains about 1.5 to 2 hours from Marrakech, and it’s best known as the starting point for climbing Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. This day trip doesn’t attempt the summit — that requires an overnight stay and a mountain guide — but it does cover the easier, well-marked valley walks around the village.
Walnut groves, terraced fields and small Berber villages line the valley, and the noticeably cooler mountain air is a welcome change from Marrakech’s heat for much of the year. This is a good option for travelers who want a taste of the High Atlas without committing to a multi-day trek.
