Merzouga exists almost entirely around one thing: access to the Erg Chebbi dunes, the most accessible large stretch of Sahara Desert in Morocco. Most activities here are built around experiencing that landscape in different ways, at different paces.
Camel trekking into the dunes
A camel trek to a desert camp is the activity most visitors build their time in Merzouga around, typically timed for sunset or sunrise, when the light on the sand is at its most dramatic. Rides are led by an experienced handler at walking pace and don’t require prior experience.
Overnight desert camps
Spending a night in the dunes — in a private tent, with dinner and often music around a fire — is the centerpiece of most Merzouga visits. Camps range from simple setups to more elaborate ones, and almost all are reached on foot or by camel from Merzouga itself.
Quad biking and 4x4 excursions
For a faster-paced way to cover the desert terrain, quad biking and 4x4 excursions run on tracks around the base of the dunes, with routes ranging from a 1-hour sunset ride to a longer half-day circuit that can include stops at volcanic hills or a nomad camp.
Sandboarding
The steeper dune faces near the camps are suitable for sandboarding, a beginner-friendly activity usually added as a short session before dinner or after breakfast.
Nomad family visits and Khamlia village
A small number of nomadic and semi-nomadic families still live around the edges of the dunes, and short, respectful visits — usually including traditional tea — can be arranged, often paired with a 4x4 excursion. Khamlia village, a short drive away, is known for its community of Gnawa musicians and is a common stop for an evening performance.
Stargazing
With very little light pollution, the dunes offer some of the clearest night skies in Morocco. This isn’t a separately organized activity so much as a feature of any night spent at a desert camp — worth checking the moon phase for if you want the darkest possible sky.
How much time do you need?
One night at a desert camp is the standard way to experience Merzouga, usually as the final stop of a multi-day tour from Marrakech, Fes, Ouarzazate or Errachidia rather than a standalone destination.
