Morocco’s size and geography mean there’s no single “best time to visit” that applies everywhere — a month that’s ideal for the Sahara Desert can be too cold for a comfortable Atlas Mountains hike, and vice versa. The short answer for most itineraries covering a mix of cities, mountains and desert is spring or autumn.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is generally considered the best all-round season. Daytime temperatures in Marrakech, Fes and Casablanca are comfortable for walking and sightseeing, the Atlas Mountains have manageable hiking conditions at lower and mid elevations, and the Sahara Desert hasn’t yet reached its summer extremes. This is also when the Ouzoud Waterfalls carry the most water.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings intense heat to inland Morocco. Marrakech and Fes regularly exceed 35-38°C (95-100°F), and the Sahara Desert can push past 40°C (104°F) during the day. The Atlantic coast — Essaouira, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier — stays significantly cooler and is the more comfortable summer choice. A desert tour is still possible in summer, but early morning and evening activity, with rest during peak heat, becomes more important.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn mirrors spring in most respects: comfortable temperatures across the cities, mountains and desert, with the added advantage of clearer skies for stargazing in the Sahara as temperatures begin to cool at night. This is a popular season for desert tours.
Winter (December to February)
Winter days are generally mild in the lowland cities and the desert, though nights can be cold — sometimes near freezing in the Sahara and colder still at altitude in the Atlas Mountains, where snow is possible above roughly 2,000 meters. A winter desert camp requires proper warm layers, but daytime conditions for sightseeing remain pleasant.
Choosing based on your itinerary
If your trip focuses heavily on the Sahara Desert, avoid July and August unless you’re prepared for extreme heat. If it’s centered on the coast, summer works well. For a typical itinerary mixing Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and a multi-day desert tour, spring and autumn remain the most reliable choices.
