The Agafay Desert is a stretch of rocky, arid hills about 30 to 40 minutes southwest of Marrakech — close enough that it functions as a half-day or evening excursion rather than a multi-day trip. Unlike Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, Agafay is a stony desert (a “reg”) without sand dunes, but it delivers wide-open desert scenery and views toward the snow-capped High Atlas on clear days.
The area has become a popular setting for sunset camps: seating and dinner set up on the open ground as the sun drops behind the mountains, often paired with a short camel ride or quad biking session on the stony tracks. Several fixed and semi-permanent camps operate in the area, ranging from simple setups to more elaborate ones.
For travelers who want a desert experience but don’t have the several days needed to reach and return from Merzouga, Agafay is the standard alternative — close enough to combine with a half-day in Marrakech, though it doesn’t replicate the scale or sand-dune landscape of the Sahara proper.
