Chefchaouen is one of the most popular additions to a northern Morocco itinerary that starts in Tangier, and the connection between the two is straightforward.
Driving time and route
The drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen takes about 2 hours by road, climbing steadily into the Rif Mountains. The route is scenic but has enough curves that travelers prone to motion sickness may want to plan accordingly.
Day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip is possible — roughly 4 hours of driving plus time in Chefchaouen — but most travelers get more out of an overnight stay, since the town’s blue-washed streets are notably quieter, and arguably more photogenic, early in the morning or in the evening once day-trip buses have left.
Private transfer vs. public transport
Buses (including CTM, Morocco’s main intercity operator) connect Tangier and Chefchaouen directly, and are a reasonable option for independent, budget-conscious travel. A private transfer costs more but allows flexibility on timing, direct hotel drop-off, and the option to continue onward toward Fes without a separate booking.
Continuing your route

Practical tip
If you’re arriving in Tangier by ferry from Spain, pick-up can typically be arranged directly from the port, so there’s no need to first head into central Tangier before continuing to Chefchaouen.
